Does the digital world represent who you are today?

The question that guides every Verity Research publication

Executive Summary

The digital world has become one of the primary places where people are first encountered.

Before a meeting takes place, before a conversation begins and often before trust is established, search engines, artificial intelligence and publicly available information have already begun shaping perception.

Digital identity is no longer simply a collection of online information. It has become part of how opportunity, credibility and reputation are formed.

Yet one fundamental question remains surprisingly unexplored.

Does the digital world accurately represent who people are today?

The Digital Identity Alignment™ Survey 2026 marks the beginning of VERITY's long-term research programme dedicated to understanding that question.

This Foundational Report introduces the Digital Identity Alignment™ Framework and presents the first observations from an exploratory survey examining how adults perceive the relationship between their lived identity and their digital identity.

Rather than providing definitive answers, this report establishes the first benchmark from which future annual research can grow.

It is the beginning of a long-term conversation about one of the defining challenges of the digital age.

Why This Research Exists

Technology has transformed how information is created, preserved and discovered.

Today, digital identity influences employment, business relationships, financial decisions, education, professional opportunities and personal trust.

Yet while technology has advanced rapidly, our understanding of digital identity has not evolved at the same pace.

People change.

Lives evolve.

Careers develop.

Mistakes are left behind.

Achievements accumulate.

Values mature.

But digital information often remains fixed in time.

As artificial intelligence increasingly gathers information from across the internet, the distinction between historical information and present reality becomes more important than ever.

VERITY Research was established to better understand that relationship.

Not to determine who people are.

But to understand whether people believe the digital world reflects who they are today.

The Digital Identity Alignment™ Framework

Every individual has two identities.

One is lived.

The other exists in the digital world.

The Digital Identity Alignment™ Framework was developed by VERITY to explore the relationship between those two identities through six interconnected dimensions.

  • Awareness
  • Accuracy
  • Trust
  • AI Representation
  • Control
  • Future Readiness

These dimensions provide the methodological foundation for every future VERITY Research publication, enabling consistent measurement and comparison over time.

Key Findings

84%

Digital identity matters.

Most participants believe that maintaining an accurate digital identity has become an important part of modern life.

Participants frequently associated digital identity with professional credibility, trust and first impressions.

─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

56%

Digital identity and lived identity are not always aligned.

Half of participants reported that at least part of their digital identity no longer accurately reflects who they are today.

Many described outdated information, older content and incomplete online profiles as contributing factors.

─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

72%

Artificial intelligence is reshaping first impressions.

Participants increasingly believe that AI-generated summaries will influence how individuals are understood before personal interaction occurs.

─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

65%

Outdated information remains visible.

Many participants reported discovering online information that they considered incomplete, inaccurate or no longer representative of their current lives.

─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

81%

People want greater control.

A significant majority expressed a desire for greater influence over how they are represented across digital platforms and artificial intelligence.

─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

What Participants Told Us

Beyond the statistics, one theme appeared consistently throughout the survey.

Participants were less concerned with removing the past than with ensuring that the present is represented fairly.

Many described digital identity as something that should evolve alongside the individual rather than remain permanently defined by earlier moments in life.

This distinction forms one of the central ideas behind the Digital Identity Alignment™ Framework.

Survey Questions

The 2026 Foundational Report was intentionally designed around twelve core questions that establish a consistent baseline for future annual research.

Awareness

  • How important is your digital identity today?
  • Have you searched your own name online?
  • Have you asked an AI system to describe you?

Alignment

  • Does your digital identity accurately reflect who you are today?
  • Have you found outdated or inaccurate information about yourself online?

Trust

  • Would someone searching your name gain an accurate first impression?
  • Which digital source would you trust most when learning about another person?

Artificial Intelligence

  • Should AI distinguish between outdated information and present reality?
  • How comfortable would you be with important decisions being influenced by AI-generated information?

Control

  • Would you improve or update your digital identity if you could?
  • Do you believe digital identity will become more important over the next five years?

Looking Ahead

The Digital Identity Alignment™ Survey 2026 represents the first chapter of an ongoing research programme.

Future editions will expand participation, broaden geographic scope and continue measuring digital identity through the same methodological framework introduced in this report.

By maintaining consistency over time, VERITY Research aims to build one of the first long-term datasets dedicated to understanding how individuals perceive digital identity in an AI-driven world.
